a few ways of getting over that creative wall

Sometimes it feels like your creativity has just disappeared altogether and you don't know if it will ever come back again.  This, of course, isn't always the case which you know when someone discovers you in your room or studio covered in clay, paint, fibers, glitter and glue. What a great feeling!! Here are some ways to get back into the swing of things when you feel like getting creative again.

1.  Try a new medium.
If you're having trouble creating a new drawing, maybe try sculpting with some clay or writing a poem. Or maybe you could trim a hedge to look like a friendly dinosaur. Sometimes all you need is a fresh new feel for your creativity, and you may even discover a new talent.

2. Make something for a friend.
I often find myself having trouble making things for myself or for an unknown audience, so making little donut charms for a friend, or a custom pet portrait for my mom helps me to get my artwork mojo flowing again.

Draw a friend's pet or make her a little clay or felt animal.

3. Go outside.
Nature helps take the mind on a new journey and, for me at least, seems to put the world into perspective. The way the world is today creates a feeling to keep on moving and never stop working, but taking some time to relax can truly open your mind.

Even rainy days can provide inspiration.

4. Try automatic writing (drawing, scuplting, etc...)
Automatic writing is a great tool the surrealists often used to let go and discover their creativity.  Try it yourself!  Grab a notebook, and just write anything that comes to mind, even if it makes no sense whatsoever.

So, get going! It's time to get creative!!

felt heart

Hello!  First of all, happy belated New Year!  I hope you are all enjoying 2014 so far.  I have been busy planning (another) move back closer to my family, trying to make my etsy shop more successful, and getting myself together.  I was considering changing the name of my blog because "garoons" really isn't even a word, and I'd like my blog title to be something people would more likely click on.  I haven't decided yet, though.

My resolutions include working harder, reading more, showing those who love me how much I care about them, and getting a super awesome hair-do.  I'm always afraid to color my hair, as I used to in the past because it was a hassle and it took so long to get back to my natural color! However, I think I may be ready to take the plunge again!

The dress I'm wearing above was an amazing thrift shop find.  It was only $5 and I am so in love with it!  It is meant to be worn with the buttons in the back but I like to wear it both ways.  :)  I'll do a post on it worn properly, too, once the weather permits bare skin (it's been damn cold in Pennsylvania & the rest of the east coast).

Also at the thrift store, I found this adorable book by Aranzi Aronzo for only $1!  I couldn't resist buying it, simply because it is called  "The Cute Book".  I didn't even look at the pages thoroughly until I got home.  It is a little crafting book on how to make cute little felt animals.  I am very glad I found it, though--I mean just reading the silly description on the characters provides tons of entertainment!  Read the one about the fish, it's so silly.

Visit Aranzi Aronzo's website here!

until next time! xoxo

ice cream, extra ice (& a melty-go-round!)

* dreaming of summertime and sweets *
* we discovered the tiniest snowman friend on our walk today! *
* Totoro wallet, wet n' wild lipstick in wine room *
Today was pretty lazy and uneventful.  We went for a walk, got coffee, and mailed tons of packages.  I also helped my boyfriends' mom dress up as Mrs. Claus for an elementary school event.  Everything has been slow and I've had a lot of free time, which I've been trying to dedicate mostly to making art.  Speaking of which, I've changed my shop name to "candied fables".  I thought it made more sense, though calico is still the color of my heart.  :)

Sorry for the lack of outfit posts lately, I've taken many but they end up looking ridiculous or I am making a silly face or something.  Hopefully I'll have some good ones soon.

Anyway, check out this beautiful carousel ice cream dream of a Christmas tree, called the "Melty-go-round"!!

wordless stories by Jee Young Lee

While searching for folktales today online, I stumbled upon these beautiful works of art by Jee Young Lee, a 30 year-old Korean artist.  She creates these beautiful stories in her studio in Seoul, a project called "Stage of Mind".   They so beautifully convey countless stories without any words.  I am speechless!

These are some of my favorites (click each photo to go to its original source):

A lot of her work is inspired by folk tales, like this one inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Match Girl".
Being a huge fan of folktales myself, Jee Young Lee's beautiful works inspired me beyond words.  Check out some more of her work here.  And more here.

my recent favorites

I've already mentioned my new love for Pacifica perfume & cosmetics (in this post), but I wanted to share a few of my other recent buys by them: Alight multi-mineral BB cream and the purifying coconut water cleansing wipes.  The BB cream is great and adds a bit of a shimmer to your skin.  It's very sheer, so if you don't need a lot of coverage it may be great for you.  It feels really soft and matches my skin well.

The coconut cleansing wipes are a nice price, $6 for 30 wipes.  I love having wipes around because they are super convenient for when I'm being lazy at home and also great for unexpected sleepovers and traveling.  I'm a coconut lover and these are really great for my sensitive skin.  I would definitely recommend these! & of course they are both cruelty-free!

Check out this amazing dress found by Luxie Vintage!  I'm in love with the print!

Moon Magic Zine recently sent me a letter full of confetti, glitter, & beautiful stickers to add to my collection--along with others of my favorite things.

Thank you for all the kind comments on my last post about my shop!  It can be a bit nerve-racking to show your art to the world so reading all of your nice words made me feel much better about it.   Also, I added shipping to the U.K. on the jewelry in my shop!

calico and company

My boyfriend bought me this cute little cat purse as an early Christmas present while it was 50% off on Modcloth.  I was nervous it wouldn't really match anything but seeing it in person I feel it matches almost anything in my childish wardrobe.  It becomes a cute little kitten companion throughout my day!   I attached some cute keychains which suit it well, including my cool colorful elephant puzzle keychain.

While walking around town last week I saw a little bin outside of a shop I'd never been to with things for $1 each.  This cat pillow was in the bin and I just couldn't resist.  "No outfit is complete without cat hair."  So true, and also the reason why lint rollers are essential.  The shop itself was breathtaking, filled with beautiful antiques and artwork.  Maybe I'll snap a few photos next time I stop in.
